Järpar is a classic Swedish dish that can be described as a type of oblong minced meat patty. They are somewhat similar to meatballs or pan-fried steaks, but have their own character and shape.
The most distinctive thing about järpar is their oblong, almost egg-shaped or roll-shaped appearance. The name “järpe” actually comes from the bird järpe, as the wrapped pieces of meat historically resembled birds.
Järpar is made with minced meat, usually beef, but veal or mixed meat are also common. The minced meat is mixed with ingredients such as breadcrumbs (or bread without edges), milk or cream, eggs, onions, and spices such as salt and pepper. They are sometimes flavored with mustard or parsley.
